“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God, Romans 8:26-27, NKJV.
I have a friend who is a great personal trainer. She is very knowledgeable of the body–how it works and how to make it burn calories. She is creative in her workout approach and she is very encouraging. The one thing she does not tolerate is groaning. You know, the grunt-like noises that come from your soul as your mind attempts to convince your body you can run that extra quarter or you can stretch a little farther or you can lose two inches around the middle this month. No excuses, grunts or groans; just keep at it. I love her outlook—keep trying and the fitness will come.
In the spiritual realm, we have a Personal Trainer as well. The Scriptures tell us that the Holy Spirit “…helps us with our weaknesses.” I think that should translate something like: “He knows how to work out our spiritually weak muscles and bring about spiritual fitness.” It also says we don’t know how to pray as we should. So many times our hearts and spirits are grieved, or deceived, or just plain selfish, and we do not know how to pray correctly. I am so glad our spiritual Personal Trainer knows what to do! It says, “…He makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.” When I am not able to groan—He can! He searches our hearts, He knows the mind of the Father and He makes intercessions for us—according to the will of God. He knows exactly what it will take for us to grow and become spiritually fit, and He is willing to ask the Father to give it to us! He is willing to take the petitions to the Throne of Mercy for us and He asks God for exactly what we need. A Personal Trainer, on a personal mission, for a person—you! Thank God that He is so willing to make sure we become spiritually fit and make sure you get in your spiritual workout with Him today!
Thought provoker: Knowing you have a fantastic Spiritual Personal Trainer, what are you going to do to apply yourself to grow spiritually today? Ask Him for wisdom, guidance, and the determination to get spiritually fit today, and in the days to come.
Lord, thank You for the awesome Personal Trainer You are in my spiritual walk! Strengthen my areas of weakness, and when I do not know how to pray, thank You that I can depend on the Holy Spirit to know exactly what to ask for me. I love You and I worship You today as my Savior, my King and my Trainer. Amen.
