Falling Leaves

Falling Leaves

For His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. By these He has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires. 2 Peter 1:3-4, HCSB.

A recent thunderstorm brought some strong winds to our area. The tree in our front yard was whipped and tossed during the storm, and many of its leaves were pulled from their stems. The leaves littered the driveway and stacked against the front steps of the house. They dried out, wilted, and turned brown in a day or two, and our teenage son enjoyed a few moments of “power tool pleasure” as he scattered them into the lawn with a leaf blower.

God’s promises are not like those leaves. His Word cannot be stripped from our lives by life’s storms, or wilted by heated trials. His promises do not fade or become brittle over time. No, in fact, they become more vibrant and stronger beacons of hope in our darkest moments. God says He has given us everything we require for life and godliness, and His provision is not diminished by our storms and trials. His promises hang tough and hold solid, and we are assured He is faithful.

So, how do we receive the things we require for life and godliness? “…through the knowledge of Him who called us….” We need to get to know God, the One who stands behind the promises. His very nature gives the promises credibility. He wants us to share in His nature—the promises are rooted in His character! His power is what makes the promises strong and vibrant. Between His character and His power, we have all we need to escape the corruption of this world and its evil desires! Our minds will never be able to comprehend how wonderful He is, but He gives us glimpses of His great character, His divine essence, through the promises He keeps and the power He gives to His children to live. His leaves, His promises, never fall from the tree, and that means we have a lifeline to sustain us through every storm! He is so good!

Thought-provoker: Are you clinging to the promises of God’s Word in this moment? Do you see beyond the promises to the divine character and unlimited power of your heavenly Father who made those promises? Live today as a child, trusting the Father’s word and depending on His power. Take a moment and meditate on how that will affect your life and give you a good day, regardless of what you are facing.

Lord, You are the God behind the promises! You have given me everything, everything, I need to live today in godliness and trust. Fill me with Your presence, and please fill this day with Your power and promises. Help me not to be entangled with the world’s nothingness, but filled with Your awesomeness! Amen.
