The Timing Belt

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.     Ecclesiastes 3:1

Thankfully, I was able to pull off the interstate. I was traveling happily on my way to an appointment, when lights on the dashboard suddenly lit up. I looked down to see the lights at the same time that the car started chugging. Yes, chugging. I know that is not a mechanical term, but our mechanic says that females have a certain vocabulary to describe mechanical failures and when men learn to decipher it, it helps them determine what to fix faster.

Anyway, I pulled off the interstate, parked on a side road, and began to investigate. The oil light was on, so I put in a quart of oil. That took care of one problem—only three more lights to go! The check engine light and two others would not go off no matter what I tried, so I called my husband. He told me to bring it home, and then he took it to Tim, our mechanic.

Tim looked it over and found a valve that had clogged, and that clog had allowed the timing to get off in the motor. He is keeping the car for a few days to work on it, flushing the lubrication system, giving it a much needed oil change, and it should be as good as new. A clogged valve knocked off the motor’s timing. Much like impatience clogs up the Lord’s timing in our lives. That little pressure valve of impatience can cause us to jump ahead of His plans, and cause the whole motor of our Christian life to chug. Or, perhaps it is the valve of procrastination. We know there is something that needs to be done, like an oil change every so many miles for our cars, but we put it off. The valve gets clogged and now the chugging in our lives is due to our lack of determination to do what we know we should do.

How much better if we would simply rest in His perfect timing and allow the motor of life to hum along at His pace? What if we went to God more often and made sure our lives were tuned up and not lacking in the areas of obedience, trust, patience, and courage? Starting today, let us put our lives’ timing in the hands of the Master Mechanic, Jesus, and let Him determine what the timing should be.

Thought provoker: Are you clogging your life’s timing with impatience, procrastination or disobedience? Ask the Lord to reveal the clogged valve in your spiritual motor and be willing to take the steps to fix it today.

Lord, thank You that You know all the timing of our lives. Give us the courage to trust You in order for our lives to align with Your will. Help us to be willing to do what You ask, and to wait when You have not revealed what is next. Thank you that Your timing is perfect! Amen.

Hope you have a good, Godly day!
