Good am! Here is Day Three of the Summer Adventure series. Please enjoy and I hope to see you tomorrow.
The To-Do List
“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,” I Thessalonians 5:28, HCSB.
Our pastor was doing a study through Thessalonians recently and when we got to chapter five, he made an interesting comment. He said, “There’s a list here of things to do, and you can check it out for yourself.” I read through the list quickly during the sermon, and then I reread it again when I got home. Fourteen things. Fourteen.
Be at peace. Admonish the idle. Encourage the fainthearted. Help the weak. Be patient with them all. Seek to do good. Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in all circumstances. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophesies. Test everything. Hold fast what is good. Abstain from evil (I Thessalonians 5:13-28).
The next time you are tempted to complain about someone else’s lack of commitment, or proudly flaunt a spiritual accomplishment, think of the list. Fourteen things that God asks us to do. The first one—be at peace—is enough to keep me busy all the time, and there are still thirteen more! Several of the “to-do” items are others-focused. We are to encourage, to admonish, and to help. Still others deal with heart attitudes and personal perspectives: rejoice, give thanks, and hold fast. It’s not a long list, but it is a hard one. And this is just one list. Others are found in Colossians, Philippians, and Romans to name a few. So, what are we to do with these to-do lists?
I believe God gave us these lists to encourage us to keep striving. If we had to-do lists that were easy to complete, we would become satisfied, complacent with our spiritual walks. We would be prideful as we thought we were accomplishing the list. With a recurring list of fourteen things, we are dependent on the grace of Jesus Christ as we attempt the list. We are humbled, we are not sufficient on our own, we are graced by Him. The to-do list helps us keep the right focus—focused completely on Him and what He is doing in our lives. So, how far have you gotten on your list today? Keep striving.
Thought-provoker: As you write your to-do list for today, include some of the ones that God has on His list and then try to accomplish them in His grace.
Lord, thank You for a to-do list that makes us dependent on You and Your grace. Please help us to keep moving forward for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
