Ava & The Staircase, The Summer Adventure Series, Day 30

Ava & The Staircase

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths,” Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV.

We had the opportunity to stay in a hotel recently, and Ava got to go along. We were assigned a room on the third floor, and the dog walk was just outside the staircase door. So, instead of traipsing back and forth to the elevator when Ava needed to go out, we took the stairs. The staircase was the old fashioned type—concrete walls with metal railings and no sight line beyond the landing just below. The first time I took Ava to the stair door, she crouched closely beside my leg and wouldn’t walk one step more than I did. But, after a few trips, her attitude changed. She knew that I had said we were going “out,” and this was the way to the door that led to a walk and some freedom to play or run, as well as take care of business. She knew I was going to stay with her and as soon as I opened the stairwell door, she bounded down the stairs, around the corner and out of sight. She had no idea what was around that corner of the staircase—there could have been a person or another dog, but that didn’t matter. She trusted me to get her to the outside door and she was willing to go.

Ava reminds me of what God asks of each of us. He asks us to acknowledge Him—recognize Him as the Lord and Master of our lives. We chafe at that concept sometimes, but it is important. Ava trusts me as her owner to take care of her and although she doesn’t always approve of my commands, she has learned it is in her best interest to submit. Now that she knows she can trust me and I work hard to do what is best for her, she bounds down the stairs. Each of us can come to the point that we trust God’s direction and follow it—bounding down the stairs—knowing that He is with us and will send us to a good place.

I am looking forward to the day when I see myself bounding down the stairs much more often than crouching in doubt. I hope we all get there soon.

Thought-provoker: What is holding us back from completely trusting God with our lives and direction? What is the source of our doubt?

Lord, please help us today to acknowledge You in everything and be willing to trust You enough to stop doubting. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
